Olive, played by Emma Stone, is a high school girl, who wants to prove everybody, that she is a unique personality, worth attention. This is a question of popularity, that bothers her most of all, as she needs to be popular at school badly. So, Olive decides, that a single lie could help her to advance her social standing. The school girl, who associates herself with Hester Prynne, the character of “The Scarlet Letter”, spreads the rumors of her loosing virginity, and in the twinkling of an eye they become the issue number one throughout the school. The news is rather shocking for the school of high moral principles, but thanks to the rumors Olive hits the highlight among her classmates and all over the school. Mr. Griffith, the English teacher as well as his wife both disapprove such desire of attention, considering it to be unhealthy for a school girl. But the teachers’ opinion doesn’t bother Olive too much. It’s either because she is not so much interested in somebody’s opinions, or she likes to make a noise in the world. Olive soon gets perfectly well into the role of a new herself. She starts to dress provocatively and behave provocatively. But, perhaps, she will realize soon, that attention and popularity are not the things of such great importance, and sooner or later the truth will out.
