The film, written and directed by Dan Gordon, is a story of Mary – a pregnant teenager of sixteen, who runaways from home. The girl sets off to California, where her dad lives. She thinks, he will understand her more than her uptight mother and stepfather, who insist on abortion. The reason is not financial; Mary’s family is wealthy enough to maintain twenty mouths, as she says. But the public opinion seems to bother Mary’s parents much more, than their daughter and her future child.
Picked up by a kind trucker Horace, the eight months pregnant girl tells him her sad story, and he offers her to visit a casino in New Mexico, where his girlfriend Darnella performs as a showgirl. After that Mary stays for a while in a trailer park, where Darnella lives, among very eccentric personalities.
Mary’s journey becomes a starting point to adult life. On the way to California, where she hopes to find a shelter and her father’s support, the girl gets acquainted with the true meaning of such notions as love, family and sacrifice.
The cast of the film includes Olesya Rulin, Cybill Shepherd, Elliott Gould, Lainie Kazan, Linda Gray, Della Reese and Cloris Leachman. “Expecting Mary” is a perfect film for a family viewing.
