«Bass Ackwards» was marked as innovative and original work in low-and-no-budget filmmaking on Official Selection in the 2010 Sundance Film Festival.
Both film director and actor Linas Phillips has managed to turn a 20 page script into a bewitching story to remind us of the importance of finding something to be excited about, and having significant experiences in our lives.
The journey starts, as journeys often do, with an ending. Linas wants to change his life going on a trip in Volkswagen van named “Shorty” which Linas bought on impulse early on. Making his way eastward from Seattle to Brooklyn he meets a homeless man (Jim Fletcher) who joins Linas for traveling. The 10-day ride makes them acquainted with different people living on the edge, some rich, some hopeless, some ridiculous, and always real. So in the end we can’t disagree – the life is a road, the road is a life.
An especially wonderful instrumental underscore by Tara Jane O'Neil and Lori Goldston produces the right mood, helping the viewers feel the road's small pleasures with our heroes before their van finally goes upside-down.
