Louis Ives is quite a curious man, who fancies himself a hero of a novel by Francis Scott Fitzgerald. He wears neckties, blue jackets and sportswear. To all that Louis works as a teacher at a Princeton prep school. But after an embarrassing incident, which cost him a job and a career of a teacher, happens, the main hero decides to become a writer.
For that purpose Louis rents a room in a Henry Harrison apartment. Henry is a failed but very talented dramatist. Being an eccentric person, who can listen to old Broadway records and dance alone, sings operettas and escorts dowagers, he soon becomes a good buddy for the former teacher. The difference in almost forty years doesn’t prejudice their friendly relations, based on the mentor/apprentice principle.
Alongside Louis finds a job in the local environmental magazine, where he encounters his co-worker Mary. Soon Ives finds himself absolutely infatuated with her. Another person, who becomes a new friend to Louis, is Harry’s neighbor, called Gershon – a musician with an absolutely shaggy hairstyle.
At the same time the relationship between Louis and Henry grows gradually to the depths, hardly ever expected by both of them…
