Two brothers, Natha and Budhia, live and work as farmers in the rural place of India, called Peepli Village. Due to a government loan, which they couldn’t have managed to pay, the brothers lose their piece of land. Full of despair, men decide to ask for help a local politician. To their great surprise, the politician offers them to commit suicide, as to his mind this is the only way, how their families could benefit from the government. The rule says, the government must help indebted farmer families, who have lost their fathers.
To think over properly the politician’s suggest, Natha and Budhia go to a bar and get drunk. A journalist, who has by chance heard their conversation in the bar, decides to write an article about their uneasy situation. Next day the article under the shocking header appears in the local newspapers. “A Death Foretold in Peepli Village” draws a wide response as among the villagers, so all over the country. Newspapers, television and even the government get involved in the case of two brothers.
The tensions are growing around the poor farmers and now almost every citizen of India wonders, if they do or not what they are supposed to do for the sake of their families’ future.
