Alex and Kate are a nice couple, engaged in vintage furniture. Their business is very successful, and the store they run produces quite a good profit. The only problem they have is their apartment, which seems to be a little bit small for a family and a teenage daughter, living with them. Soon the couple has a sudden inspiration to expand their apartment by purchasing the next door rooms, belonging to an old dame called Andra. The only thing they can do now is waiting till she dies. However, being well on in years, Andra is not going to die in the nearest future. Moreover she is not going to move anywhere from her apartment.
Kate decides to keep good relations with an old lady and possibly to become friends with her and her granddaughter Rebecca. But this is not an easy task, as Andra seems to have no particular desire to make friends at all. What makes the situation worse is the presence of a second granddaughter, Mary, whom is also very difficult to keep in touch with. Alongside with the difficulties, connected with their neighbors, Alex and Kate face the problems with their daughter, who has her own ideas of how she should look and behave. As far as the interests of two families intersect finally, it comes to a bitter conflict between them.
The comedy directed by Nicole Holofcener is provided by lots of side-splitting scenes, touching upon the issues of love, death and liberal guilt.
