Michael Douglas in the role of Ben Kalmen in his fifty and something – is a former car dealer. Due to bad luck he has lost his own business, as well as his former wife, from whom Ben is divorced. Susan Sarandon starring as Ben’s ex-wife Nancy is appeared to be the only person, who has known him pretty well since college time. The daughter he has from the first marriage is already a mom of her son, and Ben tries to keep in touch with both of them. But being separated from the family, he plays a role more likely of a good friend, than a father and a grandfather. Everything seems to go the wrong way for Mr. Kalmen, even his relationship with his new passion - a girlfriend called Jordan, played by Mary-Louise Parker. She is a daughter of a very authoritative man in the world of car business. If Ben was more motivated by this fact, these relations would bring him a good career.
The dramatic events happening to Benjamin all the way makes him to think of himself as of an unfortunate man in his middle ages - the one, whom he would have never wanted to be.
Directed by Brian Koppelman in cooperation with David Levien, the film is a good mix of comedy and drama. The situations, described in “Solitary Man” can be familiar to anyone in certain period of his or her life. The film tells the audience, how one can manage these situations by Ben’s personal example.
